Have you invested in any new equipment? As the value of your business’ property grows, so too should your contents limits.

Are you renting or leasing any office supplies? If you rent or lease large office supplies and equipment, it’s important you factor in the value to the lender in your coverage limits.

How much of your merchandise do you generally have in-office? Supplies and merchandise that you have in the office but not out on display still need to be valued so you can maintain adequate coverage.

Have you changed the type of merchandise you offer? Is it more expensive? If you now stock merchandise that is more expensive than the merchandise you offered in the past, then you may need higher policy limits. Even if you have the same merchandise but its cost has gone up, new coverage limits may be necessary.

How much risk do your services entail? If your employees and/ or you provide a service that introduces risk to your clients or your company, you may want a commercial umbrella policy to provide additional liability coverage.

Have you used your personal vehicle for any company errands? Have your employees used their vehicles? Commercial auto insurance is important even if your company doesn’t own your vehicle and you or your employees simply use a personal vehicle for company errands.

Are your liability limits sufficient and are you covered for all your activities? From product liability insurance to employment practices liability insurance to professional liability coverage, there are many specialized liability policies that can offer specific protection for your business’ needs. This year, make sure you get all those that apply.

Have you hired more employees? If you have, you may need worker’s compensation coverage, if you don’t already have it. With worker’s compensation, your injured employees can get the payments they deserve while you protect yourself from their claims.

Do you have any key employees? Key employees can hurt your business when they pass away. If you have a key employee whose passing would negatively impact your income, invest in key person life insurance.

Is your buy/sell agreement still valued correctly? If you and your partner have a buy/sell agreement, you need to occasionally review your company’s value to make sure the buy/ sell life benefits are adequate.

What speciality insurance could you use? Depending on your industry, there may be many specialty insurance coverages you can invest in to give yourself a full range of protection. This can include equipment coverage, crop coverage, business interruption insurance and more.

It can be overwhelming to consider all the different types of insurance policies a business needs. At Heritage Insurance, we’re here to help you sort through all your options and get the right Moose Jaw business insurance policiy for your company and risk exposure.
</a10:content>

Do Virtual Employees Need Insurance?

In the last few years, business has begun going places once unthinkable. Along with the Internet came the creation of virtual offices, which meant that businesses could choose to have no on-site employees. With a virtual office, a business owner in South Dakota could hire employees all over the world without even meeting them.

If you have hired these virtual workers as employees, however, and not simply retained their services as contractors, you still have some insurance responsibilities; even if they don’t work in your office with you.

Worker’s compensation: If you can’t self-insure potential worker’s compensation needs, then you must have a policy to cover your virtual employees. Although these individuals will be working in their own space, should they become injured while doing work for your company, they may be eligible for worker’s compensation benefits.

Group insurance benefits: Although not required in most locations, giving group health, life and dental benefits to virtual employees can help your employee retention and advocate a sense of loyalty to your business. This loyalty is something that may be more difficult for the owner of a virtual office to foster. Some of these benefits, such as health and dental, can keep virtual employees and their families healthy and reduce their need to take medical leave or sick time.

Liability protection: Every business, whether virtual or brick and mortar, has exposure to liabilities. Customers can be given the wrong information, products can be faulty, and services can be conducted late. All of these instances can result in damages that your customers can sue you for. Your business needs general liability and may also need product liability, but it may even need professional liability to cover the specific duties of your employees.

Disability: Some states require disability insurance benefits be provided to employees, even though this covers injuries and illnesses that are not work related. If you hire a virtual employee in any of the following states, you should find out if you are required to offer disability coverage:

California

Hawaii

New Jersey

New York

Puerto Rico

Rhode Island

There are many variables that factor into what a virtual employer may be required to offer his or her employees. These variables can depend on the location of the employee (whether domestic or abroad), the hours worked, the number of overall employees and the type of work that is completed. In order to get specific answers about virtual employee insurance requirements for your business, request an appointment with one of our agents. Together, we can ensure that your business interests, and your employees, are properly covered.

But that couldn’t be more wrong. It’s estimated that the American family pays an average of $950 in increased premiums each year to cover the costs of insurance fraud. This same increase applies to business, which in turn, have to increase prices for consumers.

The cost of insurance fraud is therefore on the shoulders of everyone, not just insurance companies.

So does fraud happen when the hardened criminal plots an elaborate scheme to milk companies for millions? Or is it the average citizen who tells a small lie for more return on their insurance claim?

That hardened criminal is an example of hard fraud. That average citizen is an example of soft fraud. But ultimately, both are guilty of insurance fraud. Whether it’s staging an auto accident, filing a false medical bill, or exaggerating a claim, all parties are equally accountable for insurance fraud. Insurance is intended to indemnify people, bringing them back to normalcy after a claim is filed. It was not created to increase people’s wealth.

Nonetheless, it’s entirely too common for people to justify insurance fraud in their head. There’s the assumption that insurance companies are making millions off of people, so why not get a fair share? Unfortunately, there’s many flaws in that logic. As already stated, the cost of insurance fraud always gets passed back to the consumer, so ultimately, the real victim of insurance fraud is consumers.
In the cold winter months, you might hire someone to remove snow from your driveway and walkway. During autumn, someone to rake leaves can be a really big help and save your underlying lawn from suffocating or becoming diseased. In the spring and summer, weeding, fertilizing, seeding and mowing will be your landscaper’s calls to arm. While it’s clear that the need for hired help with your outdoor space exists all year round, what may not be clear are your insurance liabilities when you hire lawn maintenance individuals work for you.

When hiring a contractor or company to maintain your lawn in any season, you need to make sure that you hire one that is insured. This means they have the proper liability insurance coverage as well as workers compensation when multiple employees are used because your home insurance coverage may not step in and pay the claim if the individual is injured while working on your property.

Home insurance policies can exclude injuries and accidents to individuals you employee in some capacity—even for just a few hours a week. Some states, such as Hawaii, even require homeowners to purchase workers compensation insurance to cover those whom they hire to complete a range of household chores and are paid a certain amount per quarter.

But even if your state or participation does not require workers compensation coverage and your home insurance policy is likely to cover a claim that does not involve negligence, you are still exposed to some risks. First, a claim filed against your home insurance policy could result in the payment of a deductible toward the claim. Second, it could increase your rates in future policy years.

All things considered, ensuring that you hire a properly licensed and insured company to maintain your lawn year-round is the best course of action. Then, not only can you rest assured that your lawn will look amazing during all seasons, but that your home insurance policy will never be affected by your decision.

And while some of these changes are pretty straightforward, others—like how to handle your life insurance coverage—are a bit more intricate.

Who will be Your Beneficiary?

A beneficiary change may be in order for some newlyweds who already have in-force life insurance policies. And those who don’t yet have policies need to decide whom to name as beneficiary once they do. Generally you want to avoid naming your estate as beneficiary since that move will force your life insurance death benefit to be put through probate and, as a result, your heirs will face delays in receiving the benefit. Instead, you can name an individual (such as your spouse) as your beneficiary, divide the death benefit between multiple beneficiaries, or name a revocable or irrevocable trust.

Evaluating Policy Ownership Options

When you buy a life insurance policy, you do not have to be the owner and the insured. Instead, you can name your spouse as the owner or name a trust. It is important to remember that the owner of the policy can make any changes to the policy that they want; they can change your beneficiaries and reassign ownership with no say from the insured.

Choosing between Term and Whole Life

If you don’t already have insurance, or you need an additional coverage for a temporary period (such as during the term of your mortgage), then you need to decide whether you want whole or term insurance coverage. Whole (or permanent) life insurance is guaranteed to pay out your death benefit anytime your death occurs, as long as you make payments on time. Term insurance pays a death benefit only if death occurs during a certain set of years. Additionally, term insurance does not accrue cash values.

Spouse Rider or Separate Policies?

If you and your spouse must buy insurance, you can each have your own policy or you can buy a policy to cover one of you and add a spouse rider to cover the other. This decision is important because while spouse riders might be less expensive than individual policies, they can also be restrictive in the death benefit amounts. Also, with a spouse rider, the rider’s benefit is only payable if the insured on the rider predeceases the insured on the base policy.

There is no question that life insurance is a necessary product for all newlyweds to carry. How you decide to structure your policy will depend on your unique needs and situation. Make sure you evaluate all your options and settle on a policy structure that is both affordable and efficient.

Insurance companies will take into consideration the crime rate in your area, how close your home is to a fire department, and the likelihood for weather-related claims.

Type of construction
Whether your home is made of wood, stucco siding, brick, or stone.

Age of home
New homes can typically qualify for discounts.

Amount of coverage
The amount of coverage you purchase on your home, the contents of the home, and the liability limit will play a role in the cost of your policy.

Loss valuation
How your policy will pay for your home in the event of a claim, whether it will pay the actual cash value or the amount it costs to replace the items lost.

Deductible
How much of a loss you are willing to pay before you insurance kicks in. If you have a mortgage on your home, the maximum amount of your deductible many times will be dictated by your lender.
And unfortunately, many small, home-based business owners skip the insurance planning part altogether, assuming that it doesn’t apply to them. But no matter how small your business is, or where you conduct it, insurance is a practicality that should not be ignored.

Let’s take a look at three common misconceptions about home-based business insurance, and the truth behind them.

1. My business is small—I don’t need insurance for it. Your business exposes you to a set of liabilities that you’ve not been exposed to before. As a business owner providing a service or product to clients, you can be found liable for damages that your product or service causes. Without professional liability insurance to protect yourself, you could be exposing your business or personal assets to loss.

2. My homeowners insurance will cover everything. Home insurance is a personal insurance product and does not automatically provide protection for commercial activities that take place in the home. It does not automatically protect business property that is stored in the home and does not cover liabilities that are brought on by business activities. Your home insurance policy, when your agent and insurer are notified of your business, may include special coverage for these items. If not, then you need to consider separate commercial insurance for business property and, as mentioned above, liability insurance.

3. Since my business doesn’t own my car, I don’t need commercial auto insurance. Your business entity does not need to have ownership of your car in order for you to need commercial auto insurance. The type of auto insurance you need is not determined by the ownership of the car but by the purpose behind the use of the car. If you drive your automobile for business reasons, such as picking up clients, delivering products or buying supplies, or if you ever store business or client property in the vehicle, then commercial auto insurance is likely necessary.

The goal of commercial insurance is to protect your financial liabilities and ensure that you are insulated from the financial damage that insurable incidents can cause to you and your clients. But more than that, commercial insurance products act almost as a business continuation plan by ensuing that you won’t lose business assets over liability, damage and accident expenses left uncovered by an insurance product.
But the activity of remodeling, and the results that follow, can have a drastic effect on your home insurance coverage.

Insurance during the Remodel

While you remodel your home, you need to make sure that you have the proper liability coverage in place. If you hire contractors to work on the home, they may have their own coverage. But handymen and friends of the family, if injured, will have the ability to place a claim against your home insurance policy.

Certain working conditions may create a more hazardous environment in your home and expose the interior to damages. Make sure that you do your best to minimize exposure so that you are not negligent and exposing yourself to more risk than is necessary.

The materials you choose to use during the home remodel could have an effect on your home insurance premiums. Make sure to follow the most recent code guidelines when making improvements and invest in materials that fortify your home against damage so you can see a discount reflected in your home insurance policy.

Finally, think about your contents during the renovation. In some rooms, you may have to find temporary, offsite storage for the contents. This can take them out of the purview of your policy and expose you to risk of loss unless you have a supplementary plan of coverage for them while they are offsite.

Insurance after the Remodel

Once you remodel your home, your property value will increase as will your replacement costs. And if any redecoration is included in the remodel, the value of your personal property might have increased as well. All of this translates into a need to update your home insurance policy to reflect your new values. Raising your limits ensures that you can get exactly what you need out of your policy in the event of a post-remodel insurable incident.

It’s not difficult to update your home insurance policy to reflect these changes. Just call your agent and let them know what you’ve updated, and they can help you decide what your new property and contents limits need to be. Since this will likely increase your insurance premium, you can consider raising your deductible a bit in order to balance it out.

With the explosion of the internet, many small business owners are able to work out of their own homes to save on lease and rent expenses, hire freelancers to save on taxes and employee benefit expenses, and take classes to learn how to handle their own accounting, web design and other sophisticated needs.

Attempting to save money as a small business owner is smart and effective, but for each measure you attempt to save money with, you need to look beyond the “now” and try to determine whether or not this approach will actually cost you more in the future.

As an example, let’s talk about accounting. The small business owner who attempts to do his or her own accounting could be opening themselves up to future expenses in the form of additional taxes, fines and corrections if they are not dedicated to taking the time to learn how to do these things correctly.

This leads us right to the topic of insurance. Small business owners—especially those who work out of their home—routinely skip out on getting appropriate coverage for their business. Often, these individuals feel that the cost of the insurance premiums outweighs their risk exposure. Unfortunately this leaves them exposed to numerous liabilities and losses that could easily result in the closure of their business and the depletion of their personal assets as they attempt to make themselves or their clients whole.

One of the most important forms of insurance for small businesses is professional liability insurance. This protects you, as an acknowledged professional in your field, from the liabilities associated with errors, omissions, and malpractice.

Another important insurance for a small business to consider is commercial property coverage. Whether you are working out of your home or renting space to conduct your business, the insurance covering your location does not extend to your business property. You could lose all of your electronic equipment, machinery, supplies and stock without any recompense after the incident.

Finally, commercial auto insurance is a policy that many small business owners should consider. Personal auto insurance coverage will not cover insurance claims related to the business use of your automobile—even if that use is something as simple as picking up supplies at your local office supply store.

Insurance is a valuable asset to our personal lives as well as our business lives. Without it, we leave ourselves exposed to losses that we may not be able to recover from.

Make sure your Regina Business Insurance covers everything you need with Heritage Insurance!</a10:content>

Ask The Expert: Greg Marcyniuk - Safe Graduation Celebrations

800 CHAB radio presents Ask the Expert with Greg Marcyniuk of Heritage Insurance located in Moose Jaw. When buying individual insurance policies to cover each risk, it can get confusing, which is why there are commercial package policies available to help business owners organize the insurance policies they need to protect their business into one convenient package. Often, this package can also afford an insured some discounts which makes it even more advantageous.

Not every type of insurance can be offered in a commercial package policy, however. Business owners can create their package using any of the following:

Property coverage

General liability

Employment practices

Auto

Inland marine coverage

Machinery coverage

Crime coverage

Boiler coverage

Farm coverage

Professional liability coverage

While the policy package may have some limitations, it is not cookie cutter. You individual package may have declarations, endorsements and conditions specific to you and the needs of your business. For instance,

Each package will have what is called a common policy declaration, which spells out the details of who and what is covered. It will include the insured’s name, the date of coverage start and end, a description of the nature of the business covered and the premiums.

Another package-wide spec is the common policy conditions, which spell out the responsibilities and obligations of the insured that is named first on the declaration. This ensures that, in the case of a business with multiple owners who are all named on the policy, one individual owner is responsible for making premium payments and responding to inquiries rather than having each business owner assume that another is handling it when none of them are. This is also the only individual on the policy with the power to cancel it. In order to do so, he or she must send the request in writing to the insurer. If the first named insured wishes to transfer these responsibilities to another, the request must also be made in writing and must be approved by the insurance company.

In this type of package policy, it’s also important to note that the insurance company is generally permitted to audit the insured company’s books and records at any time while the policy is in-force and for up to three years after it is canceled. They can also make an inspection or survey any time while the policy is in-force.

As you watch your teen bound out the door each day, car keys in hand, a million fears run through your mind. And while you can’t protect your teen from every driving risk they face once they walk out that door, you can take advantage of some phone apps that help enhance teen safety while they drive.

Text Disablers
There are many apps out there that can disable your teen’s ability to read or send texts while they are in a moving vehicle. These include: TextArrest and Key2SafeDriving. Other apps, like Drivesafe.ly Pro, read texts aloud and allow your teen to create an auto response that the phone sends on its own. Think of it as hands free responding.

Phone Inhibitors
Texting isn’t the only dangerous activity that can be done behind the wheel. Sometimes answering a cell phone, calling out on a cell phone, or even just talking on a cell phone can be enough to distract your teen from practicing safe driving methods. The apps Key2SafeDriving and ZoomSafer can lock and restrict your teen’s access to their phone’s call feature.

Learning Road Safety with Apps
Some apps can actually help educate your teen on how to drive safely and react appropriately to other drivers. The Dangers of Distracted Driving app shows teens how easy it is to get into an accident after being distracted for just a short time. The Steer Clear Mobile app gives kids an interactive lesson in safe driving practices that they can apply when they drive.

Ride Shotgun—through an App
You can’t be in the car with your teen driver every time they leave the house—or can you? With the Safe Driver app, you can get a text message when your teen surpasses the speed limit in any given area. While this certainly helps you keep an eye on your teen, it might also be just the push they need to remain vigilant about staying within the speed limit and avoiding accidents when they drive.

The future probably holds many more innovative apps that can help your teen be a safer, more accountable driver. Just be sure that as you choose cell phones and apps that you don’t end up selecting something that actually helps to distract your teen even more than they might normally be. After all, the purpose of the apps should be to serve—and protect.

But the financial benefits of having homeowners insurance are not experienced by policyholders unless they endure an insurable incident with a financial impact that exceeds their deductible. Of course, that doesn’t mean that there are no intangible benefits to enjoy as you pay your premiums each month.

Peace of Mind is Priceless

When you know that you have an insurance policy protecting your family, then you have peace of mind. That might not prevent an incident, but it can certainly help you sleep at night. Without homeowners insurance you are left with a subconscious nagging prompted by the insecurity that being uninsured brings with it. In this state, a lot of mental and emotional energy is used up wondering how you would rebuild your family’s life if your home were to become ruined in an insurable incident.

Guarantee Your Continued Financial Security

Insurance also ensures your financial stability. You probably have big plans for your retirement, your children’s educational future and the repayment of all your debt. But without homeowners insurance to ensure that your personal savings do not need to be utilized after an insurable incident, there is no guarantee that you will be able to realize any of these plans and dreams in the manner you want. Instead, you may be forced to use the money you so carefully saved just to rebuild your home after a fire or other tragedy. Saving money without knowing that you will be able to use it the way you intend can leave you feeling insecure and may even impact your motivation to save.

Insurance is a serious topic. It’s not a fun purchase and it isn’t something that you will use in your everyday life. A homeowners insurance policy gives you permission not to dwell on how expensive and devastating an insurable incident can be and the confidence to know that you will be able to recover financially after one.
Sometimes, in the midst of many quotes and hours spent looking for policies, shoppers can resort to simply narrowing their selection down to price and choosing the cheapest quote rather than considering the actual value of the policies they are considering buying compared to all the other policies they have looked at. But doing so isn’t the best way to make sure you are getting the best and most affordable policy to actually fit the individual needs of your home and your family. Instead you must evaluate all aspects of the policy, from coverage to deductibles, and the cost in order to get the best deal. Here is a list of items you should review before you commit.

Dwelling amount: The amount of the dwelling coverage is the amount you would get for the actual structure of your home. This includes the building that you consider your home and any other attached structure—like an attached garage.

Contents amount: The actual structure of your home isn’t the only part of your property with value. The items you fill your home with are also valuable, both financially and emotionally. Contents coverage is what you are insured for on damages to your possessions like your furniture, electronics, clothing, etc.

Loss of use: If your home were damaged in an insurable event and you were not able to live in it until repairs were completed, how would you pay for temporary housing? Loss of use in a homeowners insurance policy pays a reasonable amount for temporary living arrangements.

Covered perils: Perils are the potential insurable events that could occur and that are covered under your policy. The fewer covered perils your policy has, the fewer insurable incidents you actually have coverage for.

Calculation of home value: Insurance adjusters help insurance companies determine just how much damage was done to the property in question and how much they should pay you for that damage. In your homeowners insurance policy you will find that the company either determines your home value for damages by using replacement value or actual cash value. Actual cash value takes into consideration the value of your individual home before the incident. The goal here is to make you as whole as you were before the insurable incident. Replacement value gives you enough to replace your home without considering the depreciation. That means you may get enough to buy a comparable home, even if your individual house was not worth the same amount.

We all feel bad for the victim, but have you ever wondered who pays that million dollars? It’s the other driver. And what if that other driver—who had no malicious intent but who simply looked away for just a second—were you? And what about the small business owner who must close up shop after someone slips and falls in her store and she can’t afford to stay open while paying the awarded injury claim?

Put yourself in that hapless driver and business owner’s shoes. You’ve been ordered to pay a million dollars in damages. Your car or business insurance policy covers $300,000, then the courts go after your personal and business assets. Soon, you’re ruined—all because of a careless mistake. Fortunately, this doesn’t have to happen if you protect your liability with a personal umbrella insurance policy.

For a small additional premium each year you can purchase another million dollars of insurance coverage as a buffer between you, the courts, and financial ruin. Umbrella insurance policies offer protection against a wide range of insurable events, like:

Injury on your property

Awards for accusations of slander

Liabilities arising from employee errors

Unfortunately, even if you are sued and a large judgment does not result, you may be liable for legal fees and court costs that eat into your assets. An umbrella insurance policy can prevent that from happening.

Before getting an umbrella insurance policy, be sure to check your limits and deductibles on your current policies. Your insurer will likely declare you responsible for bridging any gaps between policy limits and umbrella policy amounts so make sure you have sufficient insurance and resources.

Accidents, moments of negligence, or even frivolous lawsuits happen every day. If you have assets that you have worked hard to build and protect, don’t lose them due to one mistake or even an out-of-the-blue lawsuit. Purchase an umbrella insurance policy and add a buffer between your assets and financial ruin.</a10:content>

Fresh Blog Postings

Read through our most recent postings from around the web: New driving regulations for commercial truck drivers Preventions initiatives for prairie provinces Government support for small businesses Thinking about what your&nb...

<a10:link href="http://www.heritageinsurance.ca/blog/Fresh_Blog_Postings.aspx" /><a10:content type="html">
Read through our most recent postings from around the web:

First, there is the presence of the very large, very cumbersome vehicle they are driving, which could close down an entire road—in both directions—during an accident. The truck could also damage more property and vehicles than another type of automobile, simply because of its massive size.

Commercial truck drivers also must remember the special liability issues that will affect his or her employer if they get into an accident. Not only would their employer be responsible for liabilities that result from the accident, but their employer’s property is at risk of being damaged as are the contents of the truck, which belong to clients of the company who could be out tens of thousands or even millions of dollars if the cargo is damaged in an accident or doesn’t get delivered on time.

This doesn’t even begin to consider those trucks that contain hazardous materials. Hazardous material, when unleashed onto a roadway after an accident, can put the lives and health of animals, nature and humans for miles around at risk and require expensive cleanup methods. And the risk doesn’t just end after the accident is cleared from the road if the hazardous materials get into the water supply.

While some accidents are unavoidable and may occur no matter how careful a truck driver is being, one of the most common causes of accidents is distracted drivers. In fact, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reported that, in 2009, 16 percent of all accident related fatalities were the result of a distracted driver. And before you dismiss that number as small, you should note that in the same year, a half million people were injured in accidents that involved a distracted driver. As a result of this proliferation of accidents resulting from distracted drivers, new anti-distracted driving regulations were announced in September 2010. These regulations are imposed against all drivers who are transporting hazardous materials, drive a commercial truck, or operate buses and rail vehicles.

In addition, many companies that employ drivers are creating special internal policies to discourage employees from driving while distracted. These rules and regulations will include banning drivers from driving while texting and restricting them from using electronic devices—like cell phones—while driving.

The overarching goal is to reduce distraction-related accidents and fatalities as anti-drinking laws and regulations have reduced fatalities resulting from alcohol use. Hopefully, if the new anti-distracted driving laws and internal employer policies are followed, it will.</a10:content>

Recent Blog Postings

Read through our recent postings from around the web: When an Employee Drives a Personal Auto for Business Errands Local woman left uninsured after basement flood in June Saskatchewan EI Numbers Continue to Fall Proper notification of vacancy does n...

<a10:link href="http://www.heritageinsurance.ca/blog/Recent_Blog_Postings.aspx" /><a10:content type="html">Read through our recent postings from around the web:
But that doesn’t mean that the business never has errands that need to be run. For instance, let’s say you have a small jewelry store. If you never travel to meet clients then it might not make sense to own a company vehicle for your employees’ use. But you might still need an employee to run to the local office supply store to pick up paper, receipt tape, pens and other basic supplies. For many businesses, that means that employees will travel to the office supply store to run a business errand in their personal vehicle.

If that employee should get into an accident in their personal vehicle on their way to run this errand for your business, their personal auto insurance policy will cover much of the basic claim. But if the accident is their fault and the injured party decides to sue for damages, they could sue your business since the employee was out on your company’s behalf at the time of the accident. In order to protect your business from the liability imposed by these potential claims you can add non-owned auto coverage into your business policy.

With non-owned auto coverage, you have a resource for covering the property damage and liability claims that can arise from an accident that occurs when an employee uses his or her personal vehicle for a business-related use. This type of coverage steps in when the limits of the employee’s personal policy are reached and can protect your business assets from the claims of injured accident victims.

When you choose to add non-owned auto coverage in your business auto policy, that doesn’t exactly mean you have a free-for-all in the event of employee accidents. Claims against your policy could increase your rates so you should still attempt to regulate the employees who run your business errands in their personal vehicles to help reduce the likelihood of accidents. For instance:

Manage and monitor your employees’ driving records so that you can send only the most responsible drivers off on errands in their cars.

Consider investing in a defensive driving course for employees who frequently run your errands in their personal vehicles.

Avoid asking younger, less experienced employees to run errands.

Between cautious behavior and proper insurance you can protect your company from unnecessary and expensive claims while still getting your office supplies purchased and small errands run when you need them.

Premises Liability – the potential for visitors to be injured or harmed while at a business location.

Operations Liability – the potential for injury to occur because of the work performed by the business.

Products Liability – the potential for products manufactured by a business to cause harm or injury

Injury to employees – laws exist that dictate the liability a business owner can have when an employee is injured during the course of employment.

Professional liability – Professionals, for example doctors and lawyers, can have additional legal duties placed on them because of their professional status.

Management Liability – the potential for directors and officers of a business to be liable because of their responsibilities to those they serve.

Other major cities, in order of size, are Prince Albert, Moose Jaw, Yorkton, Swift Current and North Battleford. The province's name comes from the Saskatchewan River, whose name comes from its Cree designation.

Saskatchewan's economy is associated with agriculture; however, increasing diversification has meant that now agriculture, forestry, fishing, and hunting together make up only 6.8% of the province's GDP.
Saskatchewan's GDP in 2006 was approximately C$45.922 billion, with 17.1% going to finance, insurance, real estate, leasing.

A common misconception for tenant's is that the landlords’ policy will cover their possessions in the event of a loss. This couldn’t be farther from the truth. The truth is a landlords' policy will be limited to providing coverage for damage to the building structure, the landlord’s equipment to service the property and liability coverage for the common areas, only. Landlord's insurance does cover a tenant’s furniture, personal possessions, or damage they might cause to the landlord’s property. The tenants are responsible for their own possessions. Tenants can also face suits for injuries others may incur when on their premises. Renters insurance is designed to protect the tenant.

Renters insurance policies include:

Property – covers the tenants possessions, such as furniture and clothing.

Liability and Medical Payments – provides coverage for the tenant in the event someone is injured on their property.

Loss of Use – provides money for temporary residence until the tenant is able to relocate.

Renters policies are typically very inexpensive and well worth the cost. Imagine for just a moment what it would cost to replace all of your possessions and pay for temporary residence until you can move back in. It very well could add up to be tens of thousands of dollars.

Do note, some renters policies will place a cap on certain types of property, such as cash, electronics, and jewelry. So be sure to discuss the type of property you have with your agent when purchasing a renters policy.

Also, in the event of a claim, you will be required to provide an inventory list of all of the items you own. We recommend keeping a list and photographs of your property and storing that list somewhere other than your rented property. Keep receipts for all major items you own also.

REGINA — A rebound in the potash sector, combined with strength in energy and still-strong population trends, will fuel 4.2-per-cent economic growth in Saskatchewan this year — the strongest in Canada, BMO said Tuesday in its latest provincial forecast.

Last year, Saskatchewan's economy contracted by 6.3 per cent due to a steep decline in potash production, as sales to China, the European Union and the U.S. fell sharply.

However, sales have bounced back in 2010 and output was up 75 per cent year over year in the first quarter, as Canpotex — the offshore marketing agency for Saskatchewan potash producers — was exporting at maximum capacity.

Meantime, the oil and gas sector, particularly the Bakken play in southeastern Saskatchewan, continues to attract investment dollars. The province netted $190 million in land sales in April, well above the $11.7 million fetched in the prior year sale, when commodity prices were much lower.

The province has also moved to lower royalties, including a three-year break on horizontal natural gas wells.

Coverage Limitations

Insurance is designed to financially restore someone to where they would have been had the loss not occurred. Therefore, the business would be required to submit records that would provide a good indication as to what the business would have actually lost in net income. It is recommended that businesses keep a copy of at least 12 months of financial records offsite for this very reason.

Most policies include a waiting period, for example 72 hours, before coverage will begin. A maximum amount paid out each month as well as the amount paid out overall for the loss of net income is determined when the policy is purchased. The policy will also specify a maximum time the coverage will extend for. So for an example, a policy may state coverage will only apply for 120 days, include a limit of $120,000 with a monthly limitation of ¼. This would indicate the business owner would only be entitled to a maximum payment of $30,000 each month with a $120,000 maximum paid out over the course of 120 days.

Extra Expense

Extra Expense coverage is used to provide relief from additional expenses a business incurs to keep the doors open, such as relocating to a temporary location while the primary location is being repaired. This coverage is provided in addition to Business Income coverage.

Extended Period of Indemnity

Typically, Business Income coverage will stop when business operations are resumed. Yet, just because business resumes, doesn’t mean the normal flow of income immediately resumes as well. Extended Period of Indemnity can provide coverage in the interim, from the time the business is able to re-open its’ doors to when the income resumes to normal income levels. However, there will be a time limit imposed as to how long the coverage will apply as the insurance company can not guarantee income restoration.

How to purchase Business Interruption Insurance

Business Interruption coverage is not sold individually. It can be added to a commercial property insurance policy or a business owner’s policy.

That is the question.

On February 16th, the Cuban government announced that as of May 1 all tourists – including Canadians – would require medical coverage to be allowed into the country. Travellers who did not comply would have to buy insurance from local Cuban companies available at the airport, port or marina in order to enter Cuba.

Understandably, with 1.5 million Canadians visiting Cuba every year, the news of enforced health coverage had private insurance providers here in Canada chomping at the bit. Press releases and flyers were churning and everyone assumed supplemental health insurance was required.

Then came the clarification that, in fact, provincial health insurance cards are proof enough for the Cubans — which launched a confusing barrage of news reports. For the record, although the Cuban tourist board has not updated their Canadian website to indicate this important point of difference, they have confirmed to Take Off eh that Canadians with provincial health cards are permitted entry into the country. And although the rule was in force as of May 1, local Cuban airport officers have apparently not yet begun asking for the document.

Location – Insurance companies will take into consideration the crime rate in your area, how close your home is to a fire department, and the likelihood for weather-related claims.

Type of construction – whether your home is made of wood, stucco siding, brick, or stone.

Age of home – new homes can typically qualify for discounts.

Amount of coverage – the amount of coverage you purchase on your home, the contents of the home, and the liability limit will play a role in the cost of your policy.

Loss valuation – how your policy will pay for your home in the event of a claim, whether it will pay the actual cash value or the amount it costs to replace the items lost.

Deductible – how much of a loss you are willing to pay before you insurance kicks in. If you have a mortgage on your home, the maximum amount of your deductible many times will be dictated by your lender.

SGI CANADA recommends discussing fire safety with your family as you can reduce the risk of fire with smart, simple safety tips such as…

Never smoke in bed or in a place where you may fall asleep.

Never leave a candle burning unattended.

Have a fire extinguisher in your home for small fires and learn how to use it properly.

Install a "kid-free zone" rule of at least three feet around the stove and areas where hot food or drink is prepared.

Stay in the kitchen when you’re cooking as many kitchen fires are caused by inattention.

Remember to never use water on a grease fire. This will cause the hot grease to splatter, which could burn you or allow the fire to spread. Smother the flames with a lid or another pan, and then turn off the burner.

Keep a portable fire escape ladder upstairs.

Store matches and lighters in a safe place that’s out of the reach of children.

Never run electrical cords under rugs or heavy furniture.

Inspect your home for fire hazards, such as overloaded electrical circuits, or light bulbs with greater wattage than a light fixture is rated.

Keep any combustible items away from all portable space heaters, water heaters, furnaces or other heat sources.

Never use gasoline or other flammable liquids in your home or basement.

Store flammable liquids in approved containers designed to store such liquids and keep them in a locked, detached shed.

If you operate a wood-burning appliance or fireplace, educate your family on its safe operation and maintenance as well as how to burn wood safely.

Have your wood burning appliance and chimney inspected by a qualified technician.

Check back next week to see more fire safety tips.

There are nearly 24,000 house fires each year in Canada. Teaching your family about fire safety may protect your home from becoming a fire statistic and, more importantly, keep your loved ones from harm.

Your fire safety plan should include a review of fire hazards in your home, an evacuation plan with different designated escape options, and a prearranged safe meeting place outside of your home. Fire statistics confirm many preventable house fires are caused by inattention while cooking with oil or grease.

“Never leave the stove for any reason when cooking with hot oil,” said Rick Barks, Assistant Vice- President of Personal Lines at SGI CANADA. “As well, never put water on an oil fire as this causes the oil to splatter and may spread the fire further which could cause severe burns. Should a fire occur, use a lid to smother the fire. Better still, don’t cook with oil, it’s healthier.”

Candles have also been the cause of many home fires. People seldom realize that candles are an open flame and can be dangerous. Other than candles, very rarely do people want an open flame in their home.

Barks recommends that when using candles, make absolutely sure they are properly supervised, away from pets, small children and combustible materials such as draperies, wood and paper.

“Never leave your home or go to sleep with a candle still burning,” said Barks. For added protection, your home should not be without working smoke alarms in key areas such as the kitchen, bedrooms, hallways and basement.

“Also, remember to check the smoke alarms each month to make sure they’re working and always change the batteries at least once a year,” said Barks.

You should also keep a complete record of your belongings. Having a detailed list of your belongings greatly assists in making the adjustment of a claim go much smoother should the unexpected occur. There are various recording options available such as writing a list, taking photos, or shooting a video of your home.

Always store your list, photos or video in a safe place away from your home in a safety deposit box, at a friend’s house, your office or with your insurance broker.

For more information on protecting your home, contact your insurance broker annually to ensure your policies are accurate, up to-date and provide the coverage your family needs.

HITS is a centralized database that provides a seven year history of auto and homeowner insurance claims. The database enables homeowner and auto insurance companies to exchange your claim history. The HITS database is maintained by CGI Insurance Information Services.

Information provided on the reports include the date of the loss, the type of loss, the name of the insurance company, policy number, the amount paid, and other general information. As with any report that is collected by a consumer reporting agency, you have the right to obtain a free copy annually. Information on how to obtain your HITS report can be found on the HITS website.

Your insurance premiums are determined by the information provided on these reports, therefore, it is recommended to check them periodically. In the event you find a discrepancy on your report, you have the right by law to dispute it. Checking your HITS report prior to shopping for or insurance coverage will give you the time needed to fix any discrepancies before purchasing a policy.
