Big RigWinter driving provides many challenges, which are only heightened when driving a big rig. As you already know, the fewer claims you make on your trucking insurance, the lower your premiums. To help keep you safe this winter, we've put together a list of tips to handle the season's worst weather.

Before Hitting the Road

  • Add a diesel additive to the gas tank. This helps prevent gasoline from gelling up, which can prevent the engine from starting.
  • Install snow tires or tire chains to improve traction while driving.
  • Ensure that all lights are working properly. Clear them off so other drivers can see your intentions.
  • Clear snow and ice from the top and front of your truck(s). Winter weather already fosters poor visibility; the last thing you need is snow flying onto your windshield from the top of the truck.
  • Keep some survival items — food, water, blankets, flashlight and more — in your truck, in case you're trapped inside for a while.

While Driving

  • Always leave plenty of room between your truck and other vehicles on the road to leave adequate time for stopping.
  • When braking, apply slow, even pressure to prevent skids.
  • Note any ice developing on the windshield as you drive, as this is a sign that the roads may become icy as well.
  • Keep tabs on the weather. If the roads are wet when temperatures begin dropping, it could create hazardous road conditions.
  • If a storm creates unsafe conditions, pull over and wait it out — no matter how long it takes. No cargo is worth your life.
Trucking insurance helps protect your fleet from damages sustained during winter — or any other time of year. Call your independent insurance agent to get the coverage you need.
