Preventing Car Vandalism: What You Can Do To Avoid Claims

Shattered Car GlassAuto insurance usually provides financial protection against vandalism. If you have comprehensive car insurance, vandalism is typically considered a covered incident.

However, it is important for drivers to take steps to minimize risks to their vehicle. The more claims you file on your policy, the higher your premium could be.

What steps can you take, then, to reduce the risk of car vandalism? And, most importantly, what should you do when an incident does occur?

Filing a Claim

If you experience vandalism, take steps to get the help you need from your auto insurance. Call your agent to file a claim.

This claim may include significant damage to the body of the vehicle. It could include broken lights or windows. And if the damage is very significant and is too costly to repair, the claim could deem the vehicle a total loss.

Don't make repairs or clean up any debris in these instances. Instead, call the police and your car insurance agent. Then, take photos of the damage and the surrounding area.

Reducing the Risk of Vandalism

There are generally several things you can do to reduce the risk of car vandalism. Here are some ways to reduce these risks:

  • Park your vehicle close to a building, including your home or place of work. Don't leave it where it is out of sight.
  • Whenever possible, use your garage. This minimizes the risk of damage to your vehicle significantly.
  • Install an alarm system on your vehicle. Some newer models will connect to the local police or will sound loudly if anyone touches the vehicle. This can deter others from damaging your vehicle.
  • Avoid parking your vehicle in any location for too long. For example, when traveling, avoid using long-term garage parking unless the area is well-lit and secure.
  • Be mindful of your surroundings. If you do not know the area or there is a high rate of vandalism around your home, take steps to avoid the area. Let the police know about any suspected risks you are facing as well.
There is no way to prevent all instances of vandalism. However, you have car insurance so that you can cover these types of risks when they do occur. Make sure your car insurance policy can adequately reflect the type of risks present in your area.
