Officer Performing Sobriety CheckImpaired driving is no joke. As we head deeper into the winter months, your top priority is to be safe on the road. When impaired, a driver's risk of causing an accident goes up.

You can face financial penalties in Saskatchewan if you get an impaired driving charge. If you carry private insurance along with your government insurance, then the charge may affect your rates. You could lose your private coverage.

You likely know that driving while impaired is dangerous and illegal. However, you also need to know what the law defines as driving while impaired.

Saskatchewan law is changing on 1 January 2017. The government has amended the province's laws about impaired driving — including changes to regulations regarding intoxication and cell phone use while behind the wheel. In many cases, these legal changes often include tougher penalties.

We are happy to provide you with an overview of some of the changing regulations that will take effect. SGI says:
  • There will be zero-tolerance for alcohol or drugs for all drivers 21 and under and for all new drivers. There will still be a 60-day license suspension with first-time charges.
  • Authorities will seize vehicles for three days for drivers with 0.04-0.08 blood alcohol content.
  • The time a person must carry an ignition lock on their vehicle is increasing. These times vary by the number of offenses.
  • There's an expanded definition of cell phone use penalties. The law now says that drivers may not hold, use, manipulate or view a cell phone while they are driving.
Some other requirements and penalties are also changing as the new laws take effect.

Visit SGI's website to learn more about these changes. You can find information on how they affect you.
